Ductless mini-split systems come with several drawbacks. First, their up-front costs can be quite high compared to conventional heating and cooling systems. For many homeowners, the initial price tag is the main factor driving their HVAC decisions. Second, the appearance of ductless systems is not to everyone's taste. Indoor blowers must be mounted to walls or ceilings. Not everyone, including some split-system users, likes the look of these units. Third, aside from the initial outlay, another consideration is the maintenance that these systems require. Unlike some other HVAC options, mini-splits do need their filters and other internal components cleaned from time to time. Regular maintenance is a must if a mini-split is going to run as efficiently as it should. Fourth and finally, while these systems can perform well even in moderately extreme conditions, a mini-split is not going to be the best idea in places that have severe temperature swings or long, harsh winters.
