Paradise offers not only sunshine and warmth. It offers also temptations, or at least that's what people have told me who've had the chance to live there. And despite its really low desert air, what the locals call paradisiacal isn't very different from the hot conditions of summer in the Midwest. Yet many people who live in these hot arid conditions enjoy pretty decent health and live for a long time. In fact, an AARP study conducted between 2011 and 2012 (Lozano et al. 2012) finds that the average life expectancy for people at age fifty is 32.3 more years for men and 37.1 more years for women. When we look at similarly hot parts of the world—like the valley of Oaxaca in southwestern Mexico, where the mean maximum temperature is 38.1 °C (100.6 °F) for June, July, and August (CEP 2001, 283)—we see that the health of people living there is a cause for inquiry and certain kinds of admiration, even for those of us who lived in the kind of cool comfort that many Americans enjoy.
Evaluating your property's design and insulation is a critical first step in selecting the ideal air conditioning installation for your needs. Large residences generally derive the most benefit from central air conditioning systems, which distribute cool air uniformly throughout the house. If, however, your home is short on ductwork or you prefer the freedom of zoned cooling, then ductless mini-split systems may be a better option. If you require air conditioning but have a limited budget, you might also consider a window unit or a portable air conditioner, both of which are relatively inexpensive to buy and install. Weighing the latter option, however, might require you to question how often and to what degree you need air conditioning. Finally, you want to consider energy efficiency in this context. More efficient systems obviously cost less to operate (and that's especially true over the long haul). A competent and professionally licensed HVAC technician can offer even deeper insights, especially with regard to ductwork and to what degree your house's insulation could be helping or hindering its energy efficiency.
The performance and durability of your air conditioning system depend heavily on its installation. No matter what kind of system you choose, only a professional installation can guarantee that it will work as it should— and that it will keep working for as long as it should. A poorly installed system may be less efficient and less reliable than one that is properly installed; in fact, many problems that system owners attribute to the nature of the system itself are really problems caused by poor installation. And because a poorly installed system can underperform in energy efficiency even when it is working, underperforming system means a comfort and a reliability problem for you—we're going to fix that with some proper installation.
